Map of Auschwitz-Birkenau
This is a map of Auschwitz-Birkenau, a concentration camp located in Germany. This camp is the first concentration camp Elli goes to with Mommy. I chose this map because it shows a bird's eye view of the entire camp and it has good labels so it is easy to recognize the different parts of the camp. This connects to the book because when Elli comes to Auschwitz she has a lot of bad experiences throughout her time there.
Time Line
September 1938: Elli's town in Czechoslovakia and Hungarian troops rename it Somorja.
May 17, 1944: All books, documents, and holy scrolls are to be burned in the Ghetto.
May 31, 1944: Elli and her family arrive in Auschwitz. Mommy and Elli get separated from Bubi and Aunt Serena. Aunt Serena gets killed in a gas chamber.
September 1, 1944: At the selection Elli doesn't pass but Mommy does. Elli follows Mommy and they are transported to Augsburg.
May 7, 1945: The Germans surrender the war.
Quote
"My fears have returned. And yet my hope, my dream, of a world free of human cruelty and violence has not vanished. My hope is that learning about past evils will help us to avoid them in the future. My hope is that learning what horrors can result from prejudice and intolerance, we can cultivate a commitment to fight prejudice and intolerance." (Bitton-Jackson 11)
This is a quote by Livia Bitton-Jackson who is a survivor of the Holocaust. This shows that she still remembers what it was like in the Holocaust and the torture she went through. This quote also says that she wishes of a world without human cruelty and violence which hasn't happened yet. I like it when she says "My hope is that learning what horrors can result from prejudice and intolerance, we can cultivate a commitment to fight prejudice and intolerance." This makes me think that she is a very inspiring person because of her good choice of words.

Artifact
(I have artifact in my hands)
I chose a notebook for my artifact. I chose this because Elli has a notebook with her poems inside it. She was supposed to put it in the pile of belongings so it would burn but instead she hides it in her dress and keeps it. Later on when she meets Pista she trusts him enough to give him her notebook. He kept it and told her that if they ever meet again the notebook will be hers again. This is a special artifact because this shows how some "enemies" aren't really enemies. Pista was nice to Elli instead of being strict and hurting her because she kept the notebook. Another reason I chose this object is because it is really special to Elli. It told me that she probably had the dream of becoming a poet.

Picture
This is a picture of women prisoners in a concentration camp. I chose this image because these uniforms they are wearing are probably similar to the ones Elli and Mommy had to wear when they were in concentration camps. Also I chose this picture so people could see the way the Jews were treated. If they have good clothes they are most likely treated better than a person in bad clothes and shoes is treated.
